Jena – city of science

460 years ago, Elector John Frederick of Saxony founded the “High School” in Jena, the basis for the University chartered ten years later. The University quickly established itself as a place of independent minds and free thinking, as exemplified by great thinkers such as Friedrich Schiller, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the Schlegel brothers or Ernst Haeckel. In the 19th century, Ernst Abbe, Carl Zeiss and Otto Schott blazed the trail for a continuing economic rise of the former town of farming and winegrowing burghers. Products like Jena glass, Zeiss microscopes and planetariums made Jena a household name worldwide. All through 2008, Jena’s Friedrich Schiller University will celebrate its 450th anniversary. February 2, the date of the anniversary of its inauguration, marks the start of a great number of events.
