Greifenstein Castle, standing on the town's landmark mountain, is one of the oldest feudal fortresses in Germany. Known until the 17th century as Blankenburg Castle, it today consists of a principal building with a great hall and tower. It has several courtyards and bastions. The Counts of Schwarzburg-Blankenburg resided here in the 13th and 14th century.
