Of the three Dornburg Palaces on the steep slope above the river Saale, the Renaissance and the Rococo Palace are owned by the Stiftung Weimarer Klassik. They were restored from 1959-1962 and opened as museums. The Renaissance Palace was built in the mid-16th century, converted between 1605 and 1608, with addition of an annex at a later date. It was bought by Grand Duke Carl August in 1824 and Goethe stayed here from 7th July to 11th September 1828, when he withdrew from Weimar after the death of his friend the prince. The Rococo Palace, built during the reign of Duke Ernst August of Saxony-Weimar between 1736 and 1747, was used by Goethe for overnight stays from 1776 onwards when he had official duties at the Dornburg Office. Interior decoration includes several different styles, ranging from Baroque to Biedermeier.
