Event highlights

There are lots of popular events in Thuringia. Numerous fairs and markets, like the Sommergewinn in Eisenach or the Krämerbrückenfest in Erfurt attract thousands of people every year.

Thuringia is a land of theatres. The best known is the German National Theatre in Weimar, where Goethe was once the director and which offers top-class plays, music and dance theatre.

The festivals are very special occasions. Every summer, the 70 steps up to St. Mary’s Cathedral in Erfurt are the impressive setting of the Cathedral Steps Festival. The KulturArena in Jena and the Art Festival in Weimar are enjoyed by international audiences every year.

Erfurt Treasure

Erfurt Treasure

An exhibition of international standing awaits visitors to the Thuringian state capital of Erfurt. Since October 2009, the so-called Erfurt Treasure is on show in the Old Synagogue, the oldest remaining synagogue in Central Europe. Hidden in 1349 during a pogrom, the treasure was not discovered until excavation work was done in the former Jewish Quarter in 1998. more – Erfurt Treasure
