Goethe bought the garden house and garden in April 1776, only a few months after his arrival in Weimar. The garden house was his home and place of work until he moved to the Frauenplan house in 1782. For another 50 years, the "lower garden" served as his "refuge". Visitors can view the kitchen and "Erdsälchen" (little earth room), Goethe's study, bedroom and two other rooms.
