The "Andreasstrasse Memorial and Education Centre" in Erfurt wins accolade for best tourism project in Europe at this year's British Guild of Travel Writers Awards. The memorial commemorates oppression and resistance during GDR times. In what is today the memorial building, the GDR Ministry of State Security operated a pre-trial detention centre and a permanent exhibition was opened in December 2013.

2015 sees the 25th anniversary of the German reunification. Thuringia has borders with Lower Saxony, Hesse and Bavaria and offers a variety of different ways of focusing on this topic, with border museums, memorials, hiking and cycle routes but also special museums.
