Museum of Friedenstein Castle
Free admissionThe Castle Museum at Friedenstein Castle houses objets d'art and cultural items ranging from antiquity to the contemporary period, including paintings by Cranach, Dutch and Flemish masters and the famous "Gothaer Liebespaar" dating from 1484. In the royal living quarters, visitors will find furniture, paintings, copperplate engravings and statues, books, coins, astronomical appliances, arts and crafts and natural products.
The highlight of the tour is the "Kunstkammer" ("Art Chamber") newly opened in 2009. Here there are unique art treasures, such as gold work by Johann Melchior Dinglinger, a robe set of turquoises which the dukes were given by Peter the Great, Nautilus goblets dating from the 16th and 17th century, carved and ground vessels made of agate, serpentine and mountain crystal, ivory goblets mounted in gold and silver, amber work and many other treasures. Other museums in the castle complex, such as the Museum of Regional History and Folklore or the Nature Museum, the Ekhof Theatre, the casemates and the castle gardens, together with numerous special exhibition, produce an authentic insight into a ducal court in the 18th century.
There are museum programmes available for school hiking/project days and excursions, both for teaching purposes and for creative leisure activities.
