Upper Castle Greiz

The Upper Castle is the most famous landmark of the town of Greiz. Visible from afar, it towers on a 50-metre hill on the right of the river Weiße Elster. From 1306 onwards, Henry II Reuss of Plauen resided here. The castle buildings were struck by lightning in 1540 and burned down. The castle was then rebuilt and altered to the form which it still retains today. The decorative Renaissance gables were added to the main east wing. Also the Castle Chapel was located in this part of the building. Directly to the right behind the gate is the “money house”, where visitors can see attractive Rococo ornamentation. Behind this are the orangery and a huge tree that cannot be missed, the “Zenta Oak”. In 1918, the state government resigned and the castle became the property of the people’s state of Reuss.
