Castle and Park Altenstein are a special gem in Thuringia's cultural scene. "He who knows Altenstein also knows what fragrance of beauty is spread over this very unique creation, a charm which enchants our heart far more than words... Here nature and art enter into a harmonious union" - poet August Trinius.
A visit to the Altenstein Park will show you how true the words of the poet Trinius are. The grounds extend over 160 hectares and link in a unique way the special features of small garden landscaping with large space-embracing contexts and flower bed design dating from the 19th and 20th century. Park and landscape merge into one. Numerous long vistas reveal a view of the Werra valley right to the crests of the Rhön region. The Castle, of which the interior was destroyed by fire in 1982, is currently being restored by the "Stiftung Thüringer Schlösser und Gärten" (Castle and Gardens Trust of Thuringia). On the circular trails through the country park, you can admire further attractions, such as the Knights' Chapel, Devil's Bridge, Duke's Grave, Chinese Cottage, Morning Gate, Altenstein Cave and Luisenthal Waterfall.
The Castle and Park Altenstein belong to the Stiftung Thüringer Schlösser und Gärten. The country park can be visited every day.
