The Kyffhausen Castle was developed into one of the biggest castle complexes in Germany around 1150. It had been erected for the protection of the nearby royal palatinate Tilleda and the royal estates in the region "Goldene Aue". Along approx. 600 metres of the Kyffhäuser mountains, three connected castles were built. The Great King Barbarossa, one of the last great principals in this complex soon made history as one of the legendary figures of the region.
