The castle was built by the counts of Henneberg in 1226-1232. It has undergone many constructional changes during the 15th and 16th centuries. After the death of the last count of Henneberg, Georg Ernst, in 1583, the castle became the property of the county of Saxony and seat of the council. It became Albertine in 1660. In 1815, the county fell to Prussia and it became the seat of highest administrative authorities after 1816.
