Schwarzburg castle towers high above the valley, surrounded by wooded mountains. Its first mentioning in the deeds dates back to 1071, together with the duke of Schwarzburg. The small river Schwarza flows around the castle mountain on three sides, thus securing it from intruders. Following two great fires the simple fortress was transformed into the Baroque and Rococo castle of today. Here, one of the biggest collections of arms which are linked in time was created. It is now exhibited at Heidecksburg Residential Castle. On the upper floor of Schwarzburg Castle you will find the Kaisersaal (Emperor's Hall). Along a wide moulding there are three rows of 76 medallions which depict Roman, Byzantine and German emperors.
