The Altenstein castle park was designed by a recognised artist of his time - it was the last great construction project of Georg II, duke of Saxe-Meiningen. An historic castle was built based on English models, of which the selected form has remained unique in Thuringia. Equally unique is the combination of garden design and landscape architecture. Hermann Fürst Pückler-Muskau, one of the outstanding garden artists of the 19th century, exercised a decisive influence on the design of the park. Park and landscape merge into one. A circular walk through the park takes you to numerous attractions, such as the Knights' Chapel, the Luisenthal Waterfall, the Devil's Bridge, the Chinese Cottage newly erected again in 2011 and many more.
