Altenburg is the town of playing-card manufacturers and of the Skat game. On a visit to the Altenburg Castle and Playing-Card Museum - once the favourite palace of Emperor Barbarossa - visitors will learn a lot about playing cards and the Skat game. More than 6,000 historic card games from five centuries, old printing moulds, card tables and equipment are presented in a separate exhibition complex, together with other exhibitions relating to the castle’s history. An old card-maker’s workshop gives an idea of how laborious card-making used to be. On each full hour, there are guided tours of the festive rooms, during which the famous Trost organ in the castle church can also be heard.
