Greiz, the former state capital and residence of the Reuss dynasty of the Older Line, has two castles for visitors to see, namely the Upper Castle and the Lower Castle – with unique architectural citations ranging from Romanesque to Art Nouveau. Between 1871 and 1918, Reuss of the Older Line was the smallest principality in the German Empire but still had a vote at the National Assembly. The town museum is housed in the Lower Castle and was named the Reuss Museum of Local History when it was founded in 1929, in honour of the former independent principality of Reuss of the Older Line, which was only 316 square kilometres in size.
