Veste Heldburg Castle

This picturesque castle complex towers above a beautiful landscape like a fairytale palace. These fortified buildings from the 15th and 16th century, a Renaissance-palace complex of noble elegance, is decorated with beautiful stone engravings, merlon-bordered terraces and romantic towers. Its charm attracts many tourists. When the weather is clear you can enjoy a marvellous view from the 45-metre high tower. The legend of the dragon slayer St George, as pictured on the monumental wall painting, fascinates the visitor as much as the tragedy of the failed conspiracy to overthrow the Saxon elector. In the cosy ambience of the baroness-apartment you will learn about the great love of the Meiningen theatre duke Georg II to his wife baroness of Heldburg, who was not of equal birth. The interior invites to interesting exhibitions and events.
