For almost one thousand years, the fortress that towers over Eisenach has been a strong fortification and magnificent residence. When visitors enter Wartburg Castle, a 900-year old history book opens up before their eyes - the courtly art of the Middle Ages, the life and work of Saint Elisabeth, Martin Luther’s translation of the New Testament, the festival of German fraternities and Wagner’s romantic opera “Tannhäuser”. All this gives Wartburg Castle its very special attraction. It is not only the epitome of a fortress but also a witness to German history and has been an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999.
