Moated Castle Heldrungen

The oldest parts of this 3-winged complex date back to the 12th century. From the southern corner of the castle Kernburg the tower "Müntzerturm" stands out. It was in this tower that the theologist and leader of the peasant revolt of 1525 was kept prisoner and was tortured. The peasant army lost the battle eventually. The Moated Castle Heldrungen has been used as a youth hostel for many years.
