Weimar, the Cultural Capital of Europe in 1999, has been home to many great people including Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Bach, Liszt, Wieland, Cranach, van de Velde and Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus.
Many museums and monuments in the city tell of this past glory, but Weimar is still very much alive today as a centre of art and culture. For generations, Weimar has attracted visitors from all over the world with its famous bronze monument to Goethe and Schiller outside the German National Theatre and with numerous museums and exhibitions. 16 unique items have meanwhile been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
